What Is The New Nissan Kicks Play

New vehicle models debut all the time, replacing outgoing versions with newer tech and styling. In most cases, the old model fades away and tries its fortunes on the used market. However, sometimes, automakers continue selling the prior generation as a more affordable alternative to the new one. Nissan is doing that with the Kicks Play, a holdover model from the 2024 model year that will be sold alongside the redesigned Kicks in 2025. While it’s more basic than the updated model, the Kicks Play offers a compelling mix of features and value and delivers strong fuel economy. 

Powertrain 

The Kicks Play comes with a four-cylinder engine, making 122 horsepower. Nissan updated the SUV for 2025 with available all-wheel drive for the first time, leaving the older model as front-drive-only. The engine pairs with a continuously variable transmission, and the combination delivers decent acceleration around town. There are certainly more powerful options on sale, but the Kicks Play’s relaxed attitude and up to 36 mpg on the highway make it an excellent, affordable commuter vehicle.  

Interior 

Inside, the Play benefits from the Nissan brand’s years of experience building the prior-generation Kicks. The space is well-built and feels high-quality. The mostly-black interior features a few color accents that help brighten up the space, and the cabin ergonomics are good. Front passengers enjoy nicely padded bucket seats with good padding and support, and adults can comfortably ride in the back. Finally, the Play has 30 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats upright, which expands to 60 cubic feet with the back bench folded flat.  

Technology 

Nissan equips a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other standard tech features include three USB ports and Bluetooth. The Nissan infotainment system is straightforward and responsive, offering quick and easy interactions in most situations. Though small, the 7-inch display offers crisp graphics and good visibility from the front seats. 

Safety 

Nissan Safety Shield 360 comes standard, bringing automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, rear automatic braking, and more. Those features are often only available in added-cost options packages for other vehicles, further increasing the Kicks Play’s value.
