The 2025 Nissan Murano vs the Competition

2025 Nissan Murano Platinum Wheels

Arriving for the 2003 model year, the first Murano was a styling innovation as the first crossover to thumb its nose at truck-like SUV styling and forge a path with softer, more luxury car-like lines while retaining the space and utility people sought in a crossover. The Murano was completely redesigned for 2025.  It looks neither like its former model nor follows SUV conventions in the mid-size crossover class. It isn’t just looks either, as the model has been completely reimagined in the interior and under the hood.

The change in propulsion is huge, with the 3.5-liter V6 of the former model giving way to a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4.  Nissan bestowed this engine with its proprietary variable compression technology, which allows high compression when the turbo boost is low. This keeps you from waiting for the turbo to spool up to have prompt power. It produces 241 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, which is channeled through a 9-speed transmission before sending power to either the front or all four wheels.  All-wheel drive is available on the SV and standard on the SL and Platinum trims.

Add a completely redesigned interior with innovative technology, and you have a model fully prepared to carry its owners into the 2030s.  How does the redesigned Murano stack against its closest competitors?  Read on to find out.  As new as it is, the Murano does not currently have official safety test results or MPG figures.

2025 Nissan Murano vs the Toyota HighlanderThe first Toyota Highlander appeared as a 2001 model. Looking like a tall wagon, the Highlander has always focused more on on-road comfort than off-road capability. The current Highlander is nearing the end of its design cycle. It can be ordered with a small third-row seat but is usually purchased and used as a 5-seater. The Highlander is available with a hybrid drivetrain. Its non-hybrid drivetrain has a 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The non-hybrid model will be the focus of this comparison.

  • Looks are subjective, but the Highlander has a very wagon shape, while Murano’s coupe-like exterior is more striking.
  • The Murano has a much more advanced interior design, including controls embedded within the wood grain and other decorative garnishes, which give it a strikingly clean appearance.
  • With its 9-speed automatic transmission, the Murano has one more ratio to keep the engine power band than the Highlander.
  • The Murano has an edge in ground clearance over the Highlander (8.3 inches vs. 8.0).
  • The Highlander provides a knee airbag for the driver, while the Murano has a knee airbag for both the driver and front passenger.
  • The convenience of remote start and a wireless phone charging station are standard on all Murano models but require an upgrade on the Highlander.
  • All Murano models have a 12.3-inch center touchscreen.  The Highlander starts with an 8-inch screen.
  • Blind-spot monitoring is standard on the Murano but is optional on the base Highlander.

2025 Nissan Murano vs the Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a shortened 5-passenger version of the brand’s third-generation 3-row Pilot model. It is one of the few models in this segment that retains a V6 engine. With standard AWD across the model line, Honda positions the Passport as their off-road adventure model, particularly with the TrailSport trim level. Its other trim levels are EX-L and Black Edition.

  • The Passport’s entry price is higher at $42,400 than the Murano at $40,470.
  • With its significantly smaller displacement engine and variable compression technology, the Murano will likely have better fuel economy. However, as of this writing, there are no official EPA figures for the 2025 Murano.
  • The maximum payload for the Murano is significantly higher than the Passport (1,407 lb. vs. 948)
  • Dual front knee airbags are standard on the Murano but require an upgrade on the Passport.
  • The standard center touchscreen on the Murano is 12.3 inches compared to just 8 inches on the Passport.
  • The Murano comes with a standard configurable 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.  A driver’s digital display is not available on the Passport.
  • The Murano comes standard with the convenience of wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All Passports require a wired connection.

2025 Nissan Murano vs the Kia SorentoThe Sorento is Kia’s mid-size crossover.  It is the smaller of Kia’s two 3-row crossovers.

The current fourth-generation Sorento, released for the 2021 model year, is a significantly older design than the Murano. It is available with non-hybrid and hybrid drivetrains.  The non-hybrid model that will be the basis of this comparison features a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.  A turbocharged version of this engine is included two steps higher than the base model.  The Sorento features eight trim levels. The base LX and higher SX trims are FWD only. S and EX trims have available AWD, and all four trims with their names starting with X-Line or X-Pro have standard AWD.  The Sorento EX FWD provides the closest comparison model to the base Murano.

  • The Murano provides significantly more cabin room (144.0 cubic feet vs. 121.3) and more passenger volume (112.0 cubic feet vs. 105.3) than the Sorento.
  • The Murano’s ground clearance is notably higher than the Sorento’s (8.3 inches vs. 6.9)
  • As a wider vehicle, the Murano offers more front and second-row hip room (56.9 / 56.9 inches vs. 55.6 / 55.1 inches) and more shoulder room (60.8 / 59.1 inches vs. 58.5 / 58.1 inches).
  • The Sorento provides a knee airbag for the driver, while the Murano has a knee airbag for both the driver and front passenger.
  • The Murano has one-inch larger brake discs in the front (13.8 vs. 12.8) and rear (13.0 vs. 12.0).
  • Styling is subjective, but the Murano has a more coupe-like than wagon-like appearance.
  • Both models feature adjacent digital displays for the driver and infotainment system. However, only the Murano adds stylish HVAC controls embedded within the decorative dash trim.

2025 Nissan Murano vs the Chevrolet BlazerThe Blazer was originally a 2-door V8-powered SUV built on a short full-size truck chassis designed for off-road driving.  The model was discontinued in the 80s, but Chevrolet has revived the name for its mid-size crossover, which features a design rich in Camaro-inspired details in both the exterior and interior. The 5-seater is available with both a turbocharged 2.0 inline-4 engine like the Murano and non-turbocharged six-cylinder engines.  The engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and FWD on most models with AWD available. The LT with 3LT package represents a price comparable model to the base Murano.

  • Comparing the Murano and standard Blazer engines, the Murano has more horsepower (241 vs. 228) and slightly more torque (260 lb-ft vs. 258).
  • The Murano provides more cabin room (144.0 cubic feet vs. 138.3) and more passenger volume (112.0 cubic feet vs. 107.8) than the Blazer.
  • Behind the rear seats, the Murano offers more cargo room (32.9 cubic feet vs. 30.5), though with the rear seatbacks down, the Blazer has slightly more cargo space (63.5 cubic feet vs. 64.2).
  • The Murano has more ground clearance than the Blazer (8.3 inches vs. 7.5).
  • The Murano has more front and rear headroom (41.1 / 39.7 inches vs. 39.8 / 38.6).
  • Appreciated when three are seated abreast in the rear seat, the Murano has significantly more rear hip room (56.9 inches vs. 54.2).
  • The standard touchscreen on the Murano is 12.3 inches versus 10.2 inches for the Blazer.
