The 2025 Nissan Rogue vs the Competition

2025 Nissan Rogue Crossover Parked at Home

The Nissan Rogue is part of the compact crossover segment, which is the best-selling automotive category in the U.S. and, therefore, the most competitive. Compact crossovers have essentially replaced sedans as the default family vehicle. Almost all mainstream and luxury brands feature a compact crossover in their model lineups. The popularity of this segment is clear, as these vehicles combine a compact and efficient size that is easy to maneuver in city traffic and parking lots with ample space to comfortably seat five people while still providing a decent amount of cargo room. Most model lines offer all-wheel drive for improved on-road traction, whether as an option or a standard feature. The segment predominantly features 4-cylinder engines, both turbocharged and naturally aspirated, and a few, like the Rogue, feature surprisingly powerful turbocharged 3-cylinder engines.

The Nissan Rogue was introduced in the 2008 model year. It is currently in its third design generation and is the best-selling Nissan model. The Rogue features a unique turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-3 engine, which incorporates the Nissan brand’s exclusive variable compression technology. This system removes the need to reduce compression when turbocharging is used, effectively creating its own high compression. As a result, the engine can maintain the efficiency and power of high compression when the turbo boost is low and adjust it downward as the boost increases. This creates a win-win situation that enables the Rogue to outperform many of its competitors while preserving high fuel efficiency.

Of course, the Rogue is more than just a trick engine. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and the safety and tech are impressive. Here is how the Rogue competes against its closest competitors.

Nissan Rogue vs Toyota RAV4Toyota introduced the car-based RAV4 in 1994, which created the compact crossover category. Today, the RAV4 is well into its fifth design generation and is built on a version of the Camry platform. It is the best-selling model in the category and the best-selling Toyota model. The RAV4 is available with conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, though this comparison only involves the non-electrified RAV4 models powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.

  • The Rogue’s horsepower nearly matches the RAV4’s (201 vs. 203), but thanks to its advanced technology, it has considerably more torque (225 vs. 184 lb-ft). The peak torque is reached at a low and accessible 2800 rpm.
  • The Rogue also beats the RAV4 in fuel efficiency with EPA-estimated city and highway mpg rated at up to 30 / 37 compared to 27 / 35 for the RAV4.
  • The Rogue can boast more passenger volume than the RAV4 (105.4 vs. 98.9 cubic feet)
  • Both models have spacious cabins, but the Rogue has more legroom for both the front (41.5 vs. 41.0 inches) and rear (38.5 vs. 37.8 inches) seats.
  • Tall drivers or front passengers will have more headroom in the Rogue (41.1 vs 37.7 inches).
  • The Rogue’s maximum cargo capacity is significantly greater than the RAV4 (74.1 vs. 69.8 cubic feet).
  • The Rogue and RAV4 received an overall 5-star rating from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) and identical sub-scores in their impact tests.

Nissan Rogue vs Honda CR-VAfter being sold in Japan for two years, the Honda CR-V entered the U.S. market in February 1997. Now in its sixth design generation, it is positioned between the HR-V and the Passport in size. The CR-V has surpassed the Accord as the best-selling Honda model and is offered with both conventional and hybrid drivetrains. The conventional drivetrain includes a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 combined with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Both the Rogue and CR-V utilize continuously variable transmissions. There is a Hybrid CR-V, but this comparison is made against the non-hybrid model.

  • The Rogue exceeds the CR-V in power, offering more horsepower (201 vs. 190) and significantly greater torque (225 vs. 179 lb-ft).
  • The Rogue also beats the RAV4 in fuel efficiency with EPA-estimated city and highway mpg rated at up to 30 / 37 for FWD models compared to 28 / 34 for the FWD CR-V.
  • The total range for the Rogue is estimated to be up to 478 miles with FWD and 450 miles with AWD. These figures surpass those of the CR-V, which are estimated at 420 and 392 miles, respectively.
  • Another way to lower fuel costs is that the Rogue runs on regular (87 octane) gas while Honda recommends premium fuel (91 octane) for the CR-V.
  • When the surface becomes rough, the Rogue’s ground clearance surpasses that of the CR-V (8.2 vs. 7.8 inches).
  • Taller drivers and front passengers enjoy slightly more headroom in the Rogue (41.1 vs. 40.0 inches), as do rear passengers (39.2 vs. 38.2 inches).
  • The NHTSA rates both the Rogue and CR-V with a 5-Star Overall rating and gives them the same sub-scores in their impact tests.
  • Rogue provides one additional year and/or 12,000 miles of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Nissan Rogue vs Kia Sportage

The Sportage is one of the original compact SUVs that came out slightly before the Toyota RAV4. However, the first Sportage models were not really crossovers as they were more truck-like with body-on-frame construction and either rear or four-wheel drive. After a two-year hiatus, and after the Hyundai purchase of Kia, the Sportage returned for model-year 2005, sharing a Hyundai car-based platform with the first-generation Hyundai Tucson. While the two models do not look anything alike inside or out, they share the same drivetrain, chassis components, and other hardware underneath. Consequently, like the Tucson, the Sportage is available with conventional, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid drivetrains. This comparison is against the conventional gas-powered Sportage, which, like the Tucson, is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-4 engine.

  • The Rogue is more powerful than the Sportage, with significantly more horsepower (201 vs. 187) and considerably more torque (225 vs. 178 lb-ft).
  • The Rogue also beats the Sportage in fuel efficiency. Its EPA-estimated city and highway mpg is up to 30 / 37 for FWD models, compared to 25 / 33 for the FWD Sportage.
  • The Rogue is estimated to have a total range of up to 478 miles with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 450 miles with all-wheel drive (AWD). These figures surpass those of the Sportage, which are estimated at 400 miles and 372 miles, respectively.
  • The Rogue’s notably tighter turning diameter (35.4 vs. 38.6 feet) makes it much easier to maneuver in tight parking lots and other spaces.
  • The Rogue comes standard with dual front knee airbags, while the Sportage does not offer them.
  • The Rogue comes standard with a cornering brake control system, whereas the Sportage does not.

2025 Nissan Rogue vs the Chevrolet EquinoxThe Equinox is Chevrolet’s entry in this popular segment. Chevrolet introduced the Equinox as a 2005 model and recently debuted the fourth-generation model for the 2025 model year. Chevrolet also sells an Equinox EV, but it shares little with the gas-powered model outside its name and general size. The gas-powered Equinox uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine, with FWD models using a continuously variable transmission while AWD models use an 8-speed automatic. The Equinox is available in LT, ACTIV, and RST trim levels. All come standard with FWD and are available with AWD.

  • The Rogue and Equinox have nearly identical starting MSRPs.  The Equinox LT FWD starts at $28,600, while the Rogue S FWD starts at just $10 less, at $28,590.
  • While engine displacements are the same, the Rogue with its VC technology has noticeably more power with 201 horsepower compared to 175 for the Equinox, and 225 lb-ft of torque compared to 203 for the Equinox.
  • The FWD Rogue gets considerably better EPA-estimated city / highway / combined fuel mileage at 30 / 37 / 33 compared to 26 / 28 / 27 for the Equinox.
  • The AWD Rogue also has better fuel mileage with 28 / 35 / 31 compared to the Equinox AWD’s 24 / 29 / 26.
  • The Rogue has more space in the cabin with 137.0 cubic feet compared to 134.1 for the Equinox.
  • The Rogue has more cargo room in both configurations:
    • Rear seats up: 31.6 vs. 29.8 cubic feet.
    • Rear seats down: 74.1 vs. 63.5 cubic feet
  • The Rogue has a shorter turning circle for improved maneuverability than the Equinox (35.4 feet vs. 37.1).
  • The Rogue offers dual front knee airbags, a feature not present on the Equinox.
