Introducing the 2026 Nissan Leaf

The original Nissan Leaf introduced Americans to the world of battery-electric vehicles. Compared to other EVs of its time, it was a practical vehicle at an affordable price. The next chapter will begin with the new 2026 Leaf. Arriving later this year, it will continue to deliver electric performance in an even more efficient package.   

To accomplish this, the 2026 Leaf will arrive with a sleeker exterior design, starting with a cleaner front end, distinctive LED lighting signatures up front and in the rear, a fastback-like roofline, flush front door handles, and roof pillar-mounted rear handles. In addition, you will notice that the 2026 Leaf has a lower ride height, along with aerodynamic wheel designs, active grille shutters, and a flat underfloor—all of which keep airflow under control. The result is an exterior drag coefficient of 0.26. 

The 2026 Leaf features a fixed panoramic roof for the first time. The glass pane has an infrared reflective coating that protects occupants inside from the glaring sun, eliminating the need for a sliding shade. The other glass panes use electrochromic technology to adjust transparency by a button, limiting the amount of light coming through.   

Powering the 2026 Leaf will be a 3-in-1 motor. This single unit combines the drive motor with an inverter and a reducer. It should be rated for up to 214 horsepower with 261 pound-feet of torque. Nissan also worked on improving noise, vibration, and harshness by targeting a lower sound level by two decibels.  

Nissan worked on packaging key components throughout the 2026 Leaf. For example, engineers placed the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit underneath the hood. This placement opens more space inside the cabin behind the dashboard.   

For better handling and ride overall, the 2026 Leaf will have a multi-link rear suspension setup. This will yield a 66 percent increase in lateral stiffness. With an upgraded rack for the electronic power steering system, the turning radius has been calibrated to be 3.94 inches tighter than the outgoing model.  

When it comes to the battery pack, the 2026 Leaf will be equipped with a new thermal recovery system through an On-Board Charger. This will enable the battery to stay warm in cold temperatures, optimizing battery performance and potentially increasing range over previous Leaf models.
